Snakes : Motif

Before the real surface designs, I did some experiment with the Illustrator. Based on images that I found, I created motives related to the snake theme and made repeated patterns to develop the idea about the concept.

Ideas and Sketches

Before I start pattern developing, I decided to experiment and see what kind of pattern do I like or do I make. I tried few patterns with watercolor.

Guillotine : Garment Sample

Sample for the guillotine concept.

Guillotine : Beading

The function of the guillotine is to kill people, or to cut one's head off. It sounds terrible but it is the most fascinating and important part of the guillotine same time. So I made a beading pattern about this head cutting thing.

Red beads represent bloods. The circle at the middle of the pattern is a person's head. I also added straight lines of green beads to keep the tension and stress.

Guillotine : Motif

I fix an image of guillotine by photoshop and started to play with it. I repeated same image over and over and created a wheel motif.

This motif is actually effected by a cockade, which is another big revolutionary thing.

Guillotine : Research

A French physician Dr. Guillotin first proposed articles in reformation of capital punishment during the French Revolution. The National Assembly started to look for the new way of capital punishment that can end people’s life without pain no matter what class the person is. A committee was formed under a physician Antoine Louis, who came up with the idea of the guillotine. The machine was made by a German engineer Tobias Schmidt, and the first execution performed in 1792.

Since the invention of guillotine has a close relationship with the French Revolution, I decided to incorporate those two themse and use “French Revolution and Guillotine” as the inspiration for my collection.

New York Public Library has a nice picture library where pictures from books and magazines are organized based on the subject. I did most of my research there. Besides the Public Library, I went to New School's Gimbel Library and found more books and images.

The collection will be women's wear. The silhouette of the garments would be created after the shape of the guillotine. Colors would have more obvious influence of the French Revolution. Color story would be built based on French tricolors; royal blue, red and white.
